Batch #4: American IPA

Recipe

– 1500 g Unhopped Plain Amber liquid malt extract
– 1500 g Unhopped Plain Light liquid malt extract
– 1000 g Dry Light malt
– 160 g Cascade hops
– dry yeast for ale (top-fermenting)

26 October (started at 14:00, finished at 16:55)

  • Combined all malt extracts with 18 L of water in the saftkoker and boiled for 10 minutes.
  • Added 50 g Cascade hops and boiled for another 50 minutes (60 minutes total).
  • Added 30 g Cascade hops and boiled for another 9 minutes (69 minutes total).
  • Added 40 g Cascade hops and boiled for another 1 minute (70 minutes total).
  • Transferred to carboy (thanks Jörg and Lars Henrik) and topped up water to 24 L.

27 October (09:00)

  • Temperature: 21 C, specific gravity: 50 points (1.050)
  • Rehydrated yeast in 25 C water for 15 minutes and added to carboy.

31 October (10:00)

  • Added final 45 g Cascade hops.

8 November (started at 15:45, ended at 17:45)

  • Alcohol content: (50-15)/7.5 = 4.7%
  • Diluted Moss malt extract in boiling water (1:1 by volume) and added 1.5 tablespoons to each half-litre bottle before bottling.
